Huts & Lodges: Wells Gray Huts
British Columbia
GPS: 52°15'N 120°13'W
The Wells Gray huts—three comfortable cabins sited a day’s hike apart—constitute the only hut-to-hut hiking inside a park in western Canada. This would be a lamentable detail if the Wells huts weren’t so spectacular. Each has views of subalpine meadows, the Trophy Mountains, or both. And with grizzlies and a number of wolf packs circulating outside, you’ll be glad for the solid walls. Ian Eakins guides three- to seven-day hiking trips inside this 1.2-million-acre (485,623-hectare) park in southeastern British Columbia. “Wells Gray lacks the name recognition of Jasper and Banff, but there’s an unbelievable amount of wilderness that you can get into quickly,” he says.
