The Best Photos From 2017

Our editor selects the most viewed and commented upon images from National Geographic's Your Shot Photo of the Day.

I like to think of every Photo of the Day that we publish as a window into a different corner of the world.

One day we might be beneath the seas with a free diver, exploring the depths of the South Pacific. The next day, it's possible we're high up in the sky above Mecca, Islam's holiest city. Many times, each photo inspires wanderlust or curiosity. Is East Africa's Great Migration as majestic and chaotic as the photographer describes? Are the walls of South America's Marble Caves really shimmering in those otherwordly shades of blues?

Photo of the Day is also a reflection of our photo community, Your Shot. For more than a year now, Photo of the Day has been curated with stellar submissions from our community members. We often will reach out to the photographers behind the images to learn the story behind the visual or the great efforts taken to get the perfect shot.

Here are the highlights from the past year. Check back daily to see where in the world we'll have a glimpse at next.
