World Calendar: Must-Attend July Events

There are some amazing events on tap all over the world, all the time. Here’s a taste of what you can see and do in July: 

• Celebrate the mask cultures of Papua New Guinea at the Warwagira and Mask Festival. The five-day event, which takes place in Kokopo, kicks off with the arrival of the Kinaval—meant to represent ancestral spirits of the Tolai people—against the backdrop of chanting and thundering drums. Other festival highlights include the Baining Fire Dance and traditional masks on display. (July 15-19)
• Join the ranks of revelers in  Düsseldorf for a family-friendly event you’ll have to see to believe—the Biggest Funfair on the Rhine. The annual celebration pays homage to the city’s patron saint Apollinaris of Ravenna local with thrilling rides, fireworks, and one of the largest parades you’ll see in Germany. A key highlight: watching eagle eyes compete for the title of Schützenkönig (“King of the Marksmen”) by shooting at a fake bird that has been raised on a target.  (July 17-26) 
• In search of a music festival to add to your travel itinerary? Look no further than the  Festival d’été de Quebec. For 11 days,  Quebec City will play host to hundreds of acts, including the Rolling Stones, Canadian darlings the Tragically Hip, and local singer-songwriter Patrick Watson. Music might be the festival’s focus, but be sure to catch the  arts de la rue (street performers) while you’re in town.  (July 9-19)
• Shellfish fans, take note: South Africa’s Knysna Oyster Festival is back for another year of finger-licking fun. This ten-day extravaganza, which takes place along the famed Garden Route in the Western Cape province, is equal parts foodiefest (more than 200,000 oysters are consumed) and sporting event, with activities ranging from a shucking competition to a marathon. Not an athlete or a bivalve enthusiast? Sit back and soak up the spectacular coastal views. (July 3-12) 
• Had your fill of oysters? Quench your thirst at the Oregon Brewers Festival. Now in its 28th year in Portland, this popular craft beer festival will be serving up close to 100 different varieties from around the U.S., along with a few Kiwi blends in the International Tent. Live music, home-brewing demonstrations, and tasty eats round out this beer lover’s paradise. (July 22-26)
