Quaint, friendly, and affordable, southwestern New Mexico’s Silver City is what Santa Fe was before trustafarians took over. Dating back to the silver boom of the late 1800s, downtown Silver City still retains that frontier feel.
PLAY
Hike or bike seven miles (11 kilometers) of rocky trails in the rolling Boston Hill, a reclaimed historic mining area overlooking town. Or hook up with the nearby Continental Divide Trail ascending the Pinos Altos Mountains in 3.3-million-acre (1.3-million-hectare) Gila National Forest.
EAT
Sunday brunch at Diane’s Restaurant is the local fave, thanks to the Hatch Benedict eggs, which include a hearty helping of the region’s beloved green chilies (dianesrestaurant.com).

SLEEP
The historic 18-room Palace Hotel is a downtown classic (doubles from $48; http://www.silvercitypalacehotel.com/).
