National Geographic's Your Shot community created vibrant images for this Great Energy Challenge assignment.

What if you could change the world for the better? People are doing it every day in ways both big and small.

National Geographic's Your Shot asked its members to capture in pictures the countless ways people are turning bright ideas into real-world innovation.

The assignment resulted in more than 3,000 images that often appear simple on the surface, but actually reveal sheer ingenuity, both time-worn and boldly experimental.

"Many of the submissions made me stop and say, Why didn’t I think of that? or I‘m stealing this idea!" says Your Shot Director Monica Corcoran, who curated this gallery, in a note to the participants. "If there was a recurring theme in the submissions, it was that sometimes the simplest ideas are the smartest."

These photos were submitted to Your Shot. Check out the website, where you can share photos, take part in assignments, lend your voice to stories, and connect with fellow photographers from around the globe.

The story is part of a special series that explores energy issues. For more, visit The Great Energy Challenge.
