World Calendar: Must-Attend Events in September
There are some amazing events on tap all over the world, all the time. Here’s a taste of what you can see and do in September:
- Fashion, theater, and art collide in a spectacular display of talent at the World of WearableArt (WOW) awards show in Wellington, New Zealand. For four nights, designers from around the world will treat the human body as a canvas at this extraordinary, even magical, event, now in its tenth year. Allow yourself to “be wowed by Wellington.” You won’t regret it. (September 24-27)
- Take a whirlwind tour of the best eats in the Rocky Mountains at A Taste of Colorado in Denver. This multifaceted food festival, held annually over Labor Day weekend, draws more than a half million visitors to capital city Denver for free live music, carnival rides, and, naturally, delectable edible goodies. (September 4-7)
- Few music festivals can compete with Festival No. 6 when it comes to eccentricity. Held in the picturesque village of Portmeirion in North Wales, this up-and-coming event blends music, art, and culture into four days of activities that indie darling Beck describes as “the coolest, most surrealist, funkiest, freakiest, best festival in the world.” Say no more. (September 3-6)
- Did you know you can take a world tour, just by traveling to Italy? It’s not too late to experience the Expo Milano 2015. The “universal exhibition,” which began in May, showcases more than 140 countries coming together to explore the vital intersection between food, our environment, and technology. Not quite sold? Scores of pavilions offer colorful windows into the different cultures of the world via cuisine, special events, and more. (Through October 31)
- Celebrate the birth of Krishna in the place where he was born at Janmashtami. The sacred birthday party kicks off with a pilgrimage to the Hindu deity’s city of origin, Mathura, in the North Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, followed by a day of fasting, dramatizations of Krishna’s life, and temple rituals. The revelry wraps up with song and dance around midnight, so come prepared for a late night. (September 5)
